I blogged!

I'm not a good blogger, blah blah blah. BUT I do like to blog, I promise. Here's what's been going on:

GIDEON: Cutest kid ever! He goes to a co-op preschool twice a week and really loves it. He is the sweetest big brother ever, and always looks out for Leah, shares with her, etc. It is really touching to watch how sweet he is with her! He loves singing, dinosaurs, trucks, and talking about all the shows and movies he's ever watched in great detail. He is very independent, and will pick out and put on his outfit all by himself. He usually doesn't match, but I'm over it. Usually, anyway. When you see a kid that doesn't match, you just assume they dress themselves, RIGHT?!?!

LEAH: darling girl! She talks SO much-- it really surprises people. She uses sentences too-- "I want cheese" "where's _____" and "what's that?" it's crazy. She's almost 17 months old. Words she uses daily: Mama, Dada, Giddy (for Gideon-- so sweet!) Hi, bye, monkey, cheese, all done, yeah, uh oh, ball, book, stop, snack, soft, treat, shoes, feet, park. .  you get the idea. She also loves to sing, and sings "The wheels on the bus" and "Pat-a-cake" basically all day. She just started doing the actions for "There was a little house" and "Here's a Ball for Baby" and it just tickles us all to death! She adores Gideon, and usually follows him around the house all day. It's nice to have some one on one time with her while Gideon is at preschool, and we have a lot of fun!

NEAL: handsome man. He is the best ever. He is on a new client at work now (Marine Corps) and impressing people left and right, as he does. He recently ran a half marathon, and totally rocked it. (Just don't ask him how many times he's been running since...) ;) He wakes up early with Leah so I can sleep in, and so he can have time with her, and she just adores him for it. If she sleeps in, and he's already gone when she wakes up, she questions "where's Dada???" before she'll let me pick her up.... very sweet for Neal, anyway. . . .

I am doing well. I love the stages of my kids right now, and have really been enjoying being a Mom. Unfortunately, I had a miscarriage a couple of weeks ago, and it was a lot harder than I imagined it would be. I went in for an ultrasound, and at first they couldn't see a baby at all, but scheduled a follow up ultrasound the next week to make sure. Then, they saw a fetus measuring super small, with a slow heartrate. Although my OB was 95% certain the pregnancy wasn't viable, all I could do was wait, which was excruciating!  Two weeks later, my body miscarried on it's own, and although that was traumatizing beyond belief, my Mom and Grandma were in town and took very good care of me and my kids. The whole process dragged on from week 7-11 of my pregnancy, when all was said and done, and was very emotionally and physically draining. I haven't decided if this experience makes me want to go public with my next
pregnancy the second I find out to receive support should this happen again, or if I never want to tell anyone until the baby is born! I will say that it is just cruel that I spot during a healthy pregnancy, and also during a miscarriage. That, as Taylor would say, is the opposite of a tender mercy. ;)

All in all, life is good. It was so wonderful to have my Mom and Grandma in town for a week, and the kids were in heaven. This is a GORGEOUS FALL out here in DC, and we are loving it! Neal's parents are coming out for Thanksgiving, (HOORAY!) and we are staying here for Christmas, which I am VERY excited about! I love this time of year!!! xoxo

They may look alike, but....

My little sweeties are quite different. Everyone knows that G was WAY chubbier, and also that he slept MUCH BETTER, but here are a few more things I'm noticing:

  • Leah gives hugs! I love it. She will wrap her arms around my neck, especially when I rescue her from something.
  • Leah is a hair puller! The entire time she nurses, she tried to rip out my hair. Probably G was just so focused on the milk, he didn't have time for anything else. ;)
  • Leah likes her back to be scratched/tickled. Gideon hated it at this age!
  • Jabba the Gideon was more mobile at this age... shocking, right??? Leah still hasn't mastered moving forward. G had a delightful little army crawl at this age.
  • Leah stopped wanting to sleep in the bouncer months ago. With Gideon, it was a surefire way to get him to sleep, and to take a long nap. We slept him in that thing until this happened, and even then I still tried a few more times, just to make sure it wasn't a fluke! ;)
  • Leah gives people the stink eye and loves doing her stink face.. G was quicker to smile, especially at strangers.
NEITHER ONE:
  • falls asleep easily in our arms
  • transfers while asleep... do some kids actually do this?!?!?
  • was overly anxious to be mobile
  • are big snugglers... guess we have to have a third to get a snuggler!

THEY BOTH:
  • LOVE THE JUMPEROO! Oh my goodness, that thing is worth it's weight in gold!
  • said "Dada" as their first word... how sweet. HUMPH!
  • love food! Some days, Leah eats more than Gideon.
  • Love keeping their special lovies close by. ;)

  • Only take the hideous hospital pacifiers
  • are the cutest, sweetest kids alive!!!!! :)

This having 2 kid thing....

So, those of you on FB (if you don't know what that means, you aren't on it) ;) know that Leah hasn't been the best sleeper. She got waaaaaay worse in December after we all stayed in the same room for 3 nights, and I fed her every time she so much as peeped. She never really got better after that, and would typically wake AT LEAST two times a night, at midnight and at 3:30-4. This was (and is, it's not over!) totally exhausting, because Neal and I don't get a good stretch of sleep. Everyone knows that G was the best sleeper of all time, so the fact that Leah is still waking at least twice a night at almost 9 months is ROUGH! I didn't think she would sleep through the night at 8 weeks, like he did, but I thought by 8 MONTHS she would for sure. Little did I know how rough it could be! (and I also know that Leah isn't the WORST sleeper, either! How do people do it?!?)

Many people have suggested sleep training. Well, we have/are.... and she still wakes up twice a night minimum. Very depressing!!!!! The only thing we haven't tried is not going in to her AT ALL and I'm not sure when I'll be ready for that.... There are a few good things in all this.... I finally got sick of Leah being in our closet and put her in with Gideon (hooray 2 bedroom condo). He has NEVER woken up because she is fussing/screaming her head off, unless it's after 6 AM. This is amazing! I never thought he was a particularly heavy sleeper, but apparently he is. Another good thing is I still love Leah JUST AS MUCH as Gideon, so I'm not a fair weather Mom. ;) Another good thing is we are able to function fairly well, despite the lack of a long stretch of sleep. Another good thing is.... nope, can't think of anything else. I want more sleep. ;)

Other than the sleep issue, I think I have adjusted well to having 2 kids. When I am at my wits end with the sleep deprivation, I remind myself that I handle 2 kids well, I just don't handle 2 hours of sleep as well. ;) Gideon does a really great job of playing at home while Leah has her morning nap, and we still get out almost daily to see friends, go to the park/play in the snow, go to the library, or whatever.

Leah loves Gideon, and lights up whenever he interacts with her, which is often. It warms my heart to come into the room to see Gideon has given Leah some toys to play with to calm her down, without even being asked. He loves to hug her and hold her, and it is so sweet!

Leah has realized that Gideon's lovey, Monkey Boy, must be super special because Gideon will not share it with her. She lunges for it when she can, and beams when she gets a hold of it before Gideon can stop her. ;) One day Gideon was having breakfast with his back to Leah. She spotted Monkey Boy and pulled him toward her. Gideon immediately recognized the rattle, and without even turning around, said "Leah can't have Monkey Boy!!!!" It was hilarious.

Looooooooooooove my kids!!!!! I get nigh unto teary almost daily seeing how sweet they are. They light up my life on a daily basis, and bring me continual joy. I was about to say I wouldn't have it any other way, but actually, I would like to have it in a way that involves a full night of sleep--- oh well. ;)

Sooooooooooooooooo

I'm totally terrible at blogging, but I also realized I'm totally terrible at documenting my life! So I want to be better. I'm mostly doing it for me, but feel free to ride along. Let's talk about my loves!

Gideon will be three in May-- I can barely believe it! He is my little buddy, and the absolute sweetest boy on the earth.
LIKES: undivided attention, carrots, reading books/having books read to him, cars (also Cars-- as in McQueen and Mater), dinosaurs, monsters, fruit snacks, preschool (we do a once a week co-op), talking while biting his bottom lip, smoothies, watching "somesing on the compoo-er", sitting on the counter while we make dinner, listening to "zugat" (music--we have no clue where he got zugat from, but it is darling), sleeping in his big boy bed, singing, jumping, all forms of treats (his Mama's son!), talking about his birthday ("It's my birthday, remember that, Mom?")
DISLIKES:  baths, (as in he screams when he hears the bath start running), naps (he hasn't napped regularly since Leah was born-- such a hater!!!!), his firetruck sweatshirt that HE chose at the store (no joke, if he won't choose clothes to wear, I tell him I'll chose for him and I'll chose his firetruck shirt.. nothing sends him scurrying to choose clothes faster), even so much as thinking about going pee or poop in a potty

Leah Love will be 9 months old in March. She is the biggest sweetheart alive!
LIKES: attention, all food except peas, spatulas, pastry brushes, whisks, her jumperoo (that thing is worth it's weight in gold!!!), baths/showers, her plug, pulling my hair while nursing, shrieking and squealing, biting things/people, looking straight up at the ceiling/sky, dancing, shrugging her shoulders,
DISLIKES: sleeping more than 3 hour stretches in the night (!), being alone in a room, rolling over, even so much as attempting to crawl, the song "Let it Go" for whatever reason

Neal turned 31 in December, and is the best husband ever.
LIKES: cooking, golf, sports, dreaming about getting a big screen TV, buying Leah onesies that say "Surrender the Booby" on them, sleeping through all of Leah's night wakings, going to Kohls, eating moltens, and massaging his sweet, hardworking wife every day
DISLIKES: when Han is sick for long periods of time, driving home from work when he can't use the HOV lane, Gideon talking while biting his bottom lip, his receding hairline, mint flavored chocolate, scuffing his shoes, people who don't think he's funny

Hannah turns 30 in May (!) and is the most amazing wife/mother/friend on earth, just ask her.
LIKES: her 2 darling children and wonderful husband, that there is a deli that sells Junior's Cheesecake minutes from her home, homemade treats, good workouts, dark chocolate, when she can breathe through her nose, reading, girls nights, all things France and French (okay, except escargot. I convinced myself that I like it in France, but let's be honest.... YUCK)
DISLIKES: being sick for 4 solid days and counting, Leah waking up every 2-3 hours in the night, stretchmarks, running whilst pushing 2 kids, not being able to justify eating homemade treats all day every day, and not being able to stop watching really disturbing shows (The Following!)

so there you have it folks, the McMillans!!!!!

Waiting for the other shoe to drop....

Hey guys! I know I have been the worst blogger ever, but I really do want to get back into it. I like doing it, and I want to make more time for it. Anyway, enough about that. Let's talk about having 2 kids. Here is the first photo of both of them-- I love it! Gideon ran into the room and yelled "Baby Leah!!!!" It was adorable. And surprising, as we usually called her "baby girl" before she was born.
Okay so to be totally honest.... as the title suggest, I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop. Having 2 kids has been absolutely amazing! Gideon is adjusting SO well, and loves Leah. Leah is a dream baby (slightly less of a dream than Gideon, but that's not saying much). She only wakes up once a night to nurse, and is a happy, smiley, and patient baby who gets doted on by her Mama, Daddy, and big brother. See?
Of course, alll this is not to say we don't have these moments:
When I took this picture, I found the situation amusing-- enough so that I took a picture instead of crying myself. This same situation has since occurred several times and I didn't find it as amusing, believe me.
To be honest, the hardest part about having 2 kids so far is the lack of alone time with Neal. I kind of like that guy, and the fact that one of us is always with baby girl in the evenings is a little rough.
Watching my 2 kids interact is the sweetest thing I have ever seen. It makes my heart burst with love, and almost brings tears to my eyes. I was super worried that Gideon would feel less loved after Leah was born, and I have felt very relieved that he seems no worse for the wear. . . so far anyway. ;) Gideon continues to be the cutest toddler on the planet, and I love him with my whole heart. And I'm very grateful that he is such an easy going, loving, cheerful, animated little boy.

So all in all, I think I'm adjusting pretty darn well! My house is never super clean, and I don't always make dinner, and I may occasionally complain about how tired I am and how I never get time for myself, but if we're being honest, that was sometimes the case before 2 kids! Don't judge me.....

In which I resurrect the blog to share Leah's birth story...

As most of you know, I really wanted to do a natural birth with Gideon, but I ended up getting an epidural after 2 sleepless nights of contractions and 6 hours of active labor. After the epidural, I stopped progressing, and they gave me Pitocin, broke my water, and he ended up taking 2 hours to push out because he was facing the wrong way. Of course I don’t know if all (or any) of this had to do with the epidural, but I was even more determined to let my body dictate labor with baby Girl. I also switched over to a Midwife practice to have more support during my birth.

I read a book on hypnobirthing and loved the ideas of relaxation, positive affirmations and letting your body take over. I practiced the techniques and planned on no epidural with baby Girl, even though I don’t think many people thought I would actually do it.

Baby Girl was due on June 3rd, and I had an appointment with my midwife on the 4th to decide where to go from there. We had an induction on the calendar for June 6th, mostly because Risa (the midwife) is superstitious and thought if we had it scheduled, we wouldn't need it. I felt anxious about being induced because I wanted a natural childbirth, so the induction date was looming over me, even though I knew I could cancel it.

The u/s was showing an 8 lb 14 oz baby, which totally freaked me out. Gideon was 7 lb 14 oz, and he got stuck in the birth canal for 2 hours! I was sure Risa would want to go ahead with the induction, but she wasn't concerned at all and assured me the baby wasn't actually that big. She checked my cervix, which was still closed and high, and told me my body wasn't ready for an induction even if I wanted one. She knew I wanted a natural childbirth, and told me we needed to wait until my body was showing more signs of being ready. She rescheduled my induction for the following Tuesday—8 days after I was due.

I was relieved but also discouraged. Why wasn't my body doing its thing??? Gideon was 2 days early, and I just always assumed baby Girl would come at about the same time. Between moving and having our one and only shower/bath redone, I was exhausted and ready for baby!

My mom came out on my due date, June 3rd, and we spent a couple of low key days together. As nice as that was, I was worried that by the time baby Girl decided to make an appearance, Mom would already be on a plane home! The good news was Gideon LOVED being around her, and that made my days more pleasant, even with her broken shoulder.

Thursday, June 6th I woke up at 1:30 AM with a hard contraction. I felt relieved and excited that my body was starting to do its thing! I contracted every 10-15 minutes until 6 AM. I was exhausted, but still pretty excited thinking about how close I must be to “real labor.” I also remembered that I had contractions 10-15 minutes apart with Gideon for one night and a full day, but these contractions were painful- they felt about the same as the contractions I felt right before getting an epidural with Gideon, which was good and bad. Good because I felt like my body was ripening, bad because I couldn’t sleep or relax all night. At 6 AM I woke up Neal and we went on a walk. My contractions were hitting hard about every 7 minutes on the walk, but when we got back home they slowed considerably. Now they were about every 20 minutes or so, and painful as they were, I knew it couldn’t be “real labor” at this pace.  I told Neal to go to work, and Cali came over with her kids. I tried to nap, but the contractions woke me up too often, and I felt pretty exhausted and emotional, especially with a full house. We all went swimming around noon, which felt really good to me, and then I once again tried unsuccessfully to nap. As my mom and Cali watched me through contractions, I felt more and more wimpy and emotional, and started crying when they hit. Cali massaged me and encouraged me through several, and my mom assured me that these contractions were moving things along. I called Neal to come home, mostly because I was an emotional wreck, and called my Dad to update him. My dad said to me “You are a strong girl—if these contractions are this hard for you, you should go see how dilated you are.” That really encouraged me, thinking my Dad thought I was so strong, because I was feeling like a huge wimp for crying through contractions that were every 15 minutes.

I called my Midwife, and a nurse told me to go to L&D if I felt like it, but that usually they told people to wait until contractions were 5 minutes apart for an hour, which I already knew, of course. Cali packed up everyone, including Mom and Gideon once Neal got home, and they left us to labor in peace. Right after they left, my contractions were 5 minutes apart for about 45 minutes, and I couldn’t bear the thought of being in a car during too many of them, so we headed to L&D at 5 PM.  I felt extremely discouraged and exhausted, worrying I wouldn’t even be admitted, and was pretty quiet in triage. They made me labor in bed on my back for 20 minutes while they monitored the baby, and the contractions were unbearable, although they had slowed back down a little, which worried me even more.

Risa came in to check my dilation, and as she was checking me, she said to the nurse “get her a room ready.” I was so relieved at that alone, and then Risa said “she’s an 8.” I yelled “WHAT?!?!?” and startled everyone. No one could believe I was already an 8, and I was OVERJOYED! One nurse proclaimed “you’re my hero!” and another asked “did you take classes???” Another exclaimed “how are you so calm?!” I was in a room by 6, and started bouncing on my birthing ball and eating popsicles. No one could believe how “calm” I was during contractions, even though I felt quite panicky as they got longer in duration.  Risa told me I looked so “cute” bouncing on the ball eating a red popsicle, just like a little kid. I called my family and updated them, even through contractions, and everyone was thrilled for me. I was so relieved that I actually wasn’t a huge wimp, and felt confident that I could deliver naturally.

Risa gave me until 7:30, and then wanted to break my water if it hadn’t broken. Baby Girl was transverse, and she wanted to break the water to force her head down into the correct position. I labored until then, only occasionally snapping at Neal, on the birthing ball, bouncing and swaying away. Right around 7, I started involuntarily moaning and yelling during contractions, which I was pretty embarrassed about, but honestly couldn’t help it. The contractions were so close together, it was getting very overwhelming to me because there was no break in between. Neal starting massaging my feet in between contractions, and that helped relax me.

The nurse came in to monitor me, which meant I had to lie down in bed. I was nervous about leaving my ball, but actually found relief in a new position. Risa came in to break my water, and joyfully told us she could feel baby Girl position herself correctly. The next contraction was much stronger, and I started yelling “I can’t do it, I can’t do it!” Risa stroked my face and assured me that I was doing it, and encouraged me to let my body do its thing. For whatever reason, it was extremely helpful to hear Risa say "you ARE doing it." I thought I couldn't, but I was! I was almost fully dilated, and Neal and Risa held my hands and spoke words of encouragement. Risa was amazing, and when I started to panic and hyperventilate through a contraction, she was able to help me slow my breathing and tame my body. All of the sudden, I yelled “I’m pushing!!!!!!” and started growling like an animal or someone possessed of a demon—it was low in my throat and quite weird, even to me. Risa, who had been holding my hands and stroking my hair starting saying, “uh…I need a gown and gloves immediately!” The nurse told me to pant and not push, but I just had to let my body take over—it was an amazing (although painful) feeling—my body completely took over, and even though there was no time for gowns or gloves or breaking down the bed, I felt calm because I knew my body knew what it was doing. After 6 minutes of pushing, Leah Shelley McMillan was born at 8:14 PM. She came out crying and they placed her on my chest right away. She was puffy and bruised from being shot down the birth canal, but it was a beautiful and unforgettable moment. Feeling my body expel her was the most amazing feeling I have ever felt in my life—our bodies are made to do this, and it was incredible to experience.

Don’t even get me started on the afterbirth mess, or the horrible hemorrhoids (NOT FAIR) or wretched tear (again, not fair), but that moment of feeling her come out of me was something that I will never forget, and it miiiiiiight even drive me to do a natural birth again. . . . I felt empowered and strong. I felt in awe of Heavenly Father, in awe of my body, and in awe of myself. For all the times I whimpered “I don’t think I can do it” there was always someone telling me “you ARE doing it.” And it wasn’t always Risa.

Updates!

Oh heeeeeey guys! I have not been blogging consistently, but today I was reading back through previous posts, and I have to say, a) I am hilarious and b) it's really good to document things. So here I go!

Life lately has been AWESOME! I cannot get over how much I love being a Mom. (Besides at Church-- sheesh, this kid can't go to nursery soon enough-- ahhhhhhhh!) Anyway. G is the cutest thing ever, and is truly a sweet boy. He started blinking at me when I wink at him-- it is SO CUTE!!! Oh my, it melts my heart. He also started talking a little- now besides Mama (which he actually says Nana) and Dada, he says "dog" (daaaa!) "more" (moe) and "bath" (bah) and occasionally "hi." He also says "mmmmm" for moo and growls like a lion when asked. He also blows for "sssssssnake" which is super cute. He signs more, please, all done, thank you, train and waves very enthusiastically. He is officially a toddler, and yes, I want another baby.

Neal just got promoted at work (so proud!) so he's feeling good about life. AND I get to get a KitchenAid! WOOOOOOT! I start teaching a week from tomorrow, and I am excited! I'll be teaching one class-- (a night class twice a week) at American University. I'll be teaching French 2, which will be more challenging, as I've only taught it once, but also more rewarding French-wise. I've been revamping my syllabus and am really excited!

We just bought tickets to fly out to Kansas City over Thanksgiving, and Neal is even flying out Sunday night with G and then I fly out *ALONE* on Tuesday morning, since I teach Monday night. I know, right?!?!?!

Here are some pics of our life:

Riverbend Park... so gorgeous, right???
G-money likes to chillax in the jogger
Look at this big boy!!!
Great Falls Park, we walked here from Riverbend. It wasn't far, but farther than I thought, and feet were sore because I wore flip flops! (it's actually a 4 mile walk, roundtrip)
He loves his Papa! and yes, G has a mullet.
Seriously, G could and would drink an entire smoothie if I were willing to share that much. Sheesh!
Hey, Mom-- can you make me a smoothie in this?
Our annual peach picking trip. Before the downpour...
I don't think I ever blogged about our solo trip to Annapolis. It was so fun!!!! Everyone should ditch their kids once in a while-- it was AWESOME to have some alone time. And sleep in. And go to a movie. And go out to dinner after 6 PM. And choose when to get out of bed. And eat a meal without sharing. And not have to get a toddler in and out of a carseat constantly. Does this make me seem like a bad Mom? Trust me. I love my  buddy boy!!!!!

I just also love alone time with this guy:
LA VIE EST BELLE!
